Cardiac Risk in the Young
CRY supports affected families and prevents young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research.
Introduction
At least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people are dying every week in the UK of undiagnosed heart conditions. 80% of these deaths occur with no prior symptoms. Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is a charity which was established in 1995 to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths (YSCD, SADS) through awareness, screening and research and to support affected families.
CRY screens approximately 30,000 young people each year and CRY has now tested over 370,000 young people since the programme was first launched. 1 in 300 people the charity tests will be identified with a potentially life-threatening condition that will benefit from lifestyle changes, treatment and sometimes corrective surgery. CRY funds fast-track services at the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology and the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology.
